Farmworker Awareness Week Events in Oregon
On March 28, farm workers and their supporters held a “Gran Marcha” for justice in Hermiston, Oregon, organized by the United Farm Workers union. (see photo)
And on Tuesday, March 31st,in Oregon:
A Governor’s Proclamation honoring Farm Worker Awareness Week was presented at a noontime rally honoring César Chávez on his birthday, March 31, on the steps of the state capitol in Salem.
The Multnomah County Commissioners presented their own proclamation honoring Farm Worker Awareness Week and César Chávez at the County Building in Portland.
The Portland State University MeCHA(Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán)group sponsored a march for farm worker justice.
State and Local Government Honor Farm Worker Awareness Week
Governor Ted Kulongoski's Proclamation designating March 29 to April 4 "Farm Worker Awareness Week" and recognizing both the contribution of farm workers to Oregon's well-being and the continuing struggle for justice in the work place will be presented at a public ceremony at the state capitol in Salem at noon on Tuesday, March 31, the birthday of farm labor organizer Cesar Chavez. For the first time, similar proclamations have been issued by the Multnomah County Commissioners and the Portland City Council, adding further legitimacy to the farm worker movement.
