Farm Worker Awareness Week 2008

NFWM Board and staff across the nation honored Cesar Chavez's birthday during Farm Worker Awareness Week (March 30 - Arpil 5) by sponsoring reflection and action events supporting farm worker justice campaigns of today.

Forty events that NFWM either sponsored or helped plan were held in New York, Ohio, Florida, Illinois and California and Oregon. The creative activities included:
information tables and/or speaking events at 13 high schools and colleges,
including a prayer at local worship services or helping plan one
including a farm worker prayer at meals, seminars, meetings
helping organize a theater production of On Eagles Wings,
a poetry reading,
a movie night
taking workers' places at Loyola Marymount so they could have a lunch celebration,
gleaning more than 10,000 pounds of fruits & vegetables left after harvests and distributing them to area food banks
a proclamation of Farm Worker Awareness Week by the Governor Kulongoski of Oregon.

Along with education and reflection on our vital connection with farm workers, these events produced more than 1000 signatures on postcards and petitions supporting the UFW's Beef Northwest workers, FLOC's Reynolds Tobacco campaign, and CIW's Anti-Slavery petition.

NFWM and farm workers are grateful for your creativity and commitment to justice for farm workers!
